What are the benefits of massage? Relaxation and rest while travelling

A massage can offer a pause for your body and mind during a trip. Explore realistic expectations for short-term relaxation, physical comfort and an evening wind-down, then choose the touch and treatment you prefer.

During a trip to Ho Chi Minh City, a head spa or massage can give you a break from getting to the next stop. You might want to rest after walking, relax your shoulders and back after sitting, or simply lie down quietly for a while.

For some people, massage brings short-term relaxation and comfort. Start with the areas you would like cared for, the kind of touch you enjoy and the time you have available that day.

1. A pause from a busy day

Walking, shopping, taking rides and checking maps can run together on a trip to Ho Chi Minh City. Even when you sit down, you may still be thinking about the next stop. A massage offers time to lie down, reduce outside distractions and notice how your body feels.

In one small experiment, participants who received massage and those who rested quietly both reported greater relaxation and less stress. That does not mean everyone responds the same way, but it supports a practical expectation: massage can be one way you enjoy taking a break.[1]

At SOL, tell us the pressure you prefer and any areas you would like us to focus on or avoid. You can ask for a lighter touch around your shoulders and neck, leave an area out, or request adjustments during the session.

2. Some discomfort may ease for a short time

Some people want to relax their shoulders and neck; others are more concerned about their back or legs. When choosing a treatment, look beyond the words ‘full-body massage’ to the areas included and whether you enjoy oil, warm stones or other techniques.

Some research on neck, shoulder and lower-back pain has found possible short-term relief. However, the strength of the evidence and the duration of benefits are limited, so it should not be assumed that massage is appropriate for every kind of pain.[2]

SOL’s essential oil and hot stone full-body massage includes the head, neck, shoulders, back, arms and legs, with warm stones. We adjust the service to your feedback so the touch and pressure stay within a comfortable range. Seek a medical assessment first if pain is persistent or unexplained.

3. A transition into your evening rest

If you enjoy the relaxed feeling after a massage, you could schedule it after the day’s activities. For example, you might shop in the afternoon, eat in the early evening, then have a massage before returning to your accommodation to rest. This leaves a part of the day without rushing to the next stop. Allow time for travel and your arrival arrangements too.

Research on massage and sleep involves specific groups and treatment programmes; some of the evidence also concerns acupressure. It cannot be applied directly to a typical traveller’s single spa visit. Massage can be part of your evening wind-down, without an expectation of deeper sleep every time. Ongoing sleep difficulties still call for appropriate medical help.[3]

Choosing a SOL treatment by touch and content

Once you understand what to expect from massage, choose the service you would like. SOL’s full-body massages and Vietnamese head spa have different content, so base your choice on the areas you want cared for that day.

Essential oil and hot stone full-body massage: oil and warmth

Essential oil and warm stones accompany massage of the head, neck, shoulders, back, arms and legs. If you enjoy this kind of touch, explore the hot stone range. You can discuss warmth and pressure during the session.

Chinese wellness massage: massage, hot stones, scraping and cupping

Chinese wellness combines body massage, hot stones, gua sha scraping and cupping. Explore this range if scraping or cupping interests you, and let us know if there is an element you would like to skip. This service is not offered to pregnant guests, people with heart disease or those with wounds.

Vietnamese head spa: hair washing, head massage and facial care

If you would rather have your hair washed along with head massage and facial care, choose the Vietnamese head spa. The package also includes ear care and nail trimming for hands and feet. The 120-minute option adds hair conditioning, scalp exfoliation and hot-stone-related care.

Head spa and full-body massage are separate service ranges. If you would like both on the same day, we will check available times for the services you choose.

Pressure and warmth should feel comfortable

‘A little lighter here’, ‘Please avoid this area’ and ‘The stones feel a little hot’ are all requests you can make during a session. If something hurts or feels uncomfortable, ask the therapist to adjust or stop.

If you are pregnant, have a recent injury, are receiving medical treatment or are unsure whether massage is appropriate for you, consult a healthcare professional first. We can then discuss which arrangements are available.[2]

Frequently asked questions

Does a massage have to hurt to work?

Pain is not a measure of benefit. We adjust pressure to your feedback. If something hurts, feels too hot or is uncomfortable, ask for an adjustment or for the session to stop.

Should I choose 90 or 120 minutes?

Within each hot stone and Chinese wellness range, the 90- and 120-minute options include the same service elements, with different time allocations. The 120-minute Vietnamese head spa adds conditioning, scalp exfoliation and hot-stone-related care. Choose by the content and time you have available.

Can massage guarantee better sleep?

Sleep and responses to massage vary from person to person. Massage can be part of an evening wind-down, but it cannot guarantee better sleep. Persistent sleep difficulties still need appropriate medical help.

Does full-body massage include hair washing?

Full-body massage and Vietnamese head spa are separate service ranges. Ask about the services and available times if you would like both on the same day.
